- It depends. If you live in Silicon Valley and the number you are connecting
- to has the same local telephone exchange as yourself, you really should get
- solid 28.8K connections. If you don't, it could be some line problem, but
- is most likely the modem (either at your end, or the other end).

- If you suspect line trouble, listen to your ordinary calls to see if there is
- any crackle or cross-talk in the connections.

- If you are calling long distance, it is probably unlikely you will get stable
- 28.8K connections.
